Audience of One

Audience of One

Audience of One.

Music that's only for you, only this once.

Sign up to receive a song at a random time that you'll only be able to listen to once, in that same moment.

Songs are hosted online, using links that 'self-destruct' after you've played them once.

A thought experiment.

Imagine you've been given a magic radio.

A radio that plays music only you can hear, where none of the songs ever get repeated. Every song is unique, and will only ever be heard by you.

How differently would you listen to that radio?

Imagine you want to make music.

You want to experiment with new sounds, new genres, new lyrics. You want to create magical moments for your audience, but you find yourself blocked by the pressure of creating tracks that will live permanently on the internet or on hard drives.

How much more free would you feel if every track you wrote was only heard by one person, once?

This thought experiment is at the heart of Audience of One.

I'm Bailey, a long time lover of music and amateur singer-songwriter. I want to write more music as part of my journey on the Enrol Yourself Makers' Marathon, but I've found myself creatively blocked.

I've felt as if when I 'put something out there' it's forever, and it defines me. I'm not ready for that.

Audience of One is my way around this problem.

If you sign up, I'll ask you for inspiration, a prompt – or I'll write songs based on whatever's in my own head. Later on I'll email you with a link to one of my tracks that you can listen to when you get the time.

The catch? After one use, the link goes dead. So you can only listen to it the one time.

If you sign up, you really are an audience of one. One song, one time, one recipient.

By participating in this experiment I hope I'll be able to give you a feeling, an experience, a moment. A moment with the magic radio.

How it works.

Step 1:

Sign up here with your name and email address.

Step 2:

You should receive a confirmation email from theaudienceofoneproject@gmail.com.

If you want you can reply to the email with ideas, inspiration or creative prompts for me to use in my songwriting.

Step 3:

At a random time in the future (I don't know if I'll be writing every day or every month) you'll receive an email with a link to your track.

The in-browser mp3 player is more reliable when you use a laptop rather than a phone or a tablet.

Step 4:

Settle down and enjoy your one-time-only musical moment 🎶 ❤️

If you try to refresh the page or open the link another time, you'll see a 'Time's up' page. The track has disappeared now forever.

Listen to your track by opening the one-time link in any web browser. It'll look like this ^

If you experience issues with the app, contact me at theaudienceofoneproject@gmail.com.

I'm interested in expanding the app in future. I may try to make the one-time-only links more foolproof, make it possible to listen to tracks on mobile or make it possible for other musicians to use the app. But for now I don't have time, so you'll have to bear with me.
